How ADHD symptoms can change during perimenopause and menopause

Many women first begin to question ADHD during perimenopause or menopause. Changes in hormone levels can affect brain chemistry involved in attention, motivation, mood, and emotional regulation.

How our care works

  • 1

    Specialist consultation (45 min)

A menopause specialist doctor takes time to explore your symptoms, hormonal stage, medical history, and any existing ADHD diagnosis or concerns.

  • 2

    Personalised plan

Where appropriate, this may include menopause treatment, lifestyle strategies, or guidance on further assessment (such as referral to a psychiatrist).

  • 3

    Ongoing review and support

Prescription management, blood tests if needed, and continuity of care for as long as you need.

Is specialist ADHD and menopause support right for me?

This service is not suitable if you are seeking: A formal ADHD diagnostic assessment Initiation, review, or adjustment of ADHD medication

You may benefit from specialist menopause support if these feel true for you:

1 I am experiencing menopausal symptoms alongside changes in focus, mood, or cognitive function
2 I have ADHD and feel symptoms have shifted during perimenopause or menopause
3 I would like a menopause specialist to assess whether hormonal factors may be contributing

Menopause treatment options tailored to you

There is no single treatment pathway for menopause. Any plan is created collaboratively with you and tailored to your individual symptoms, medical history, and preferences.

Where relevant, your doctor will consider how hormonal changes may be affecting focus, mood, and cognitive function in relation to menopause care

Our specialist approach to menopause care for women with ADHD
Step 1

Specialist menopause assessment

Your initial consultation is a 45-minute appointment, designed so you don’t feel rushed.

During your consultation, your specialist doctor will:

  • Explore your menopausal symptoms in detail
  • Review your hormonal stage and medical history
  • Discuss any existing ADHD diagnosis, where relevant
  • Consider whether symptoms such as brain fog, mood change, or overwhelm may be hormonally influenced
  • Talk through appropriate investigations or next steps

The focus of this appointment is menopause assessment and treatment. It does not include ADHD diagnosis or medication management.

Step 2

Personalised menopause treatment plan

There is no single treatment pathway for menopause care, which is why we focus on personalising your care to you.

Depending on your individual needs, your doctor may discuss:

  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT), where appropriate
  • Adjustment of existing menopause treatment
  • Non-hormonal medical options
  • Lifestyle and behavioural strategies that support cognitive function
  • Psychological therapies, such as CBT or coaching, where helpful

Any treatment plan is created with you, taking into account your symptoms, preferences, and long-term health.

Step 3

Ongoing clinical care and support

Many women benefit from continued support as symptoms evolve over time.

At Menopause Care, you’ll have access to:

  • Follow-up appointments with your specialist doctor or nurse
  • Support from our care team between appointments
  • Clear guidance on treatment adjustments and next steps

Our aim is not just symptom management, but helping you feel informed, supported, and confident through change.

Everything you want to know

Please note: we are not an ADHD diagnostic service

Formal ADHD diagnosis and the prescribing of ADHD medication must be carried out by a psychiatrist. Our role is to assess hormonal and menopause-related factors, provide specialist menopause care, and support you alongside (or before) psychiatric input where appropriate.
