Understanding early hormone changes and what they mean for you
Premature ovarian insufficiency, often called POI, is a condition where the ovaries stop functioning as they should before the age of 40. This leads to reduced production of key hormones, particularly oestrogen, and can affect periods, fertility, bone health, heart health, and overall wellbeing.
For many women, POI is unexpected and distressing. Symptoms may develop gradually or appear suddenly, and the condition is often misunderstood or diagnosed late. With the right specialist support, it is possible to manage symptoms effectively and protect long-term health.
How our care works
- 1
Specialist consultation (45 min)
A menopause specialist doctor takes time to explore your symptoms, hormonal stage, medical history, and any existing ADHD diagnosis or concerns.
- 2
Personalised plan
Your clinician will create a personalised care plan based on your symptoms, medical history, and priorities. This may include hormone treatment where appropriate, alongside practical lifestyle and wellbeing support.
- 3
Ongoing review and support
Prescription management, blood tests if needed, and continuity of care for as long as you need.

A detailed overview of how our doctors assess, treat, and support you

Specialist consultation for POI support
Your first appointment is a 45-minute consultation, designed to give you the time and space to fully explore your symptoms and concerns.
During this assessment, your specialist clinician will:
- Talk through your POI symptoms in detail, such as irregular or absent periods, acne, excess hair growth, weight changes, fatigue, or low energy
- Review your menstrual and hormonal history, including when symptoms started and how they have changed over time
- Discuss how PCPOIOS may be affecting your mood, sleep, concentration, and emotional wellbeing
- Review any previous investigations or diagnoses related to POI
- Consider other conditions that can overlap with POI, such as thyroid disorders or insulin resistance
- Advise whether blood tests or further investigations would be helpful
Your clinician will explain what is most likely contributing to your symptoms and what support may be appropriate. If your symptoms suggest a different or additional condition, they will guide you towards the right next steps.
Treatment options tailored your POI symptoms
POI affects each woman differently. There is no single treatment approach, which is why care needs to be personalised.
Depending on your symptoms, priorities, and stage of life, your clinician may discuss:
- Hormonal treatments to help regulate periods, manage androgen-related symptoms, or protect the lining of the womb
- Non-hormonal medical options, where appropriate
- Blood tests or monitoring, to support safe and effective treatment
- Metabolic and lifestyle support, including guidance around nutrition, movement, energy levels, and insulin resistance
- Psychological or emotional support, such as CBT, if POI symptoms are affecting mood, confidence, or wellbeing
Your care plan is developed with you, taking into account your symptoms, preferences, reproductive goals, and long-term health.
Ongoing support and review
POI is a long-term condition, and symptoms can change over time. Many women benefit from ongoing review rather than one-off appointments.
After your initial consultation, you can access:
- Follow-up appointments with a specialist clinician as needed
- Support from our care team between appointments
- Clear guidance on reviewing and adjusting treatment over time
- Prescriptions and blood tests, where recommended, coordinated through our clinic
Your care is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains appropriate, safe, and aligned with how you are feeling and what matters to you.
