Testosterone Replacement for Women
For some women during perimenopause and menopause, low testosterone may contribute to low sexual desire, arousal and organsm and potentially reduced energy, cognitive changes, low mood and tiredness. When prescribed appropriately and monitored carefully, testosterone can play an important role in supporting wellbeing as part of menopause care.
At Menopause Care, all testosterone assessments and prescribing are led by BMS-accredited menopause specialist doctors with extensive experience in complex menopause management. We consider the full clinical picture, guided by evidence, expert judgement, and your individual health circumstances.
What to Expect
- 1
Specialist assessment
Blood tests, questionnaire, and a 30 minute consultation with a menopause specialist, plus your personalised plan and GP letter
- 2
Start treatment if appropriate
If testosterone is recommended, we prescribe the most suitable option and explain exactly how to use it and what to expect
- 3
Monitor and review
Follow up reviews with repeat blood tests to check safety, response, and adjust or stop treatment if needed

Benefits of Testosterone
Testosterone replacement in perimenopause and menopause is best known for improving sexual function, particularly:
- Improved libido, sexual desire and arousal
- Greater sexual satisfaction
The strongest evidence in women is for low sexual desire or arousal (HSDD). Emerging research suggests that some women may also notice:
- Increased energy and reduced fatigue
- Improved mood, with less anxiety or irritability
- Clearer thinking, focus and mental clarity
- Support for muscle strength, recovery and bone health
A flexible, individualised approach
Every woman’s situation is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Your clinician will work with you to decide whether testosterone is worth considering, explain what benefits are realistic for you, and outline what to expect if you choose to try treatment.
There is no pressure to continue if it does not feel right. Treatment is reviewed carefully, adjusted if needed, and stopped if it is not helping, so care remains safe, effective and tailored to you.
Testosterone treatments we prescribe
At Menopause Care, we prescribe a range of testosterone treatments. Your clinician will recommend the most suitable option based on your symptoms, results and preferences.
Is testosterone for me?
You are likely to be a good fit for this assessment if these feel true for you:
How the Testosterone Care Package works
This testosterone package (£249) covers your full assessment, including blood tests and specialist review (Steps 1–4). Medication and any follow-up appointments are not included and are arranged separately if you choose to proceed.

Book your baseline testosterone blood test
Arranged through our partner labs. Add a home blood draw for £60 if you prefer.
Complete your online medical and symptom questionnaire
Your symptoms, goals, medical history and current HRT are reviewed to help you and your doctor make the most of your appointment.
Attend 30 minute video consultation with a menopause specialist (typically around 2 weeks after blood tests)
We comprehensively review your symptoms, HRT, and blood results to decide if testosterone is appropriate and safe.
If testosterone is appropriate for you, your clinician will explain the benefits, risks, and alternatives, and you can decide whether to proceed. Not everyone is suitable, and we will tell you clearly if it is not recommended.
Receive your personalised treatment plan and prescription
You will receive a clear written plan tailored to you. If treatment is recommended, we will also issue your prescription and explain how to use it safely.
Your plan will include:
- The treatment we recommend and why
- Your starting dose and how to apply it
- What improvements to look for and when (often 6 to 12 weeks)
- Possible side effects and what to do if you notice them
- Your monitoring plan, including when to repeat blood tests and reviews
- A GP summary letter for your records
Ongoing review and safety monitoring
Safe testosterone use requires regular review. If you start treatment, we recommend follow-up appointments with blood tests to make sure treatment is working well for you and remains safe.
Reviews are typically at 3 months, 6 months and 12 months, then yearly.
At each review we will:
- Check how your symptoms have changed and whether you are noticing benefit
- Review your blood results to ensure levels remain in a safe range
- Adjust your dose if needed, or discuss stopping if it is not helping
- Check for side effects such as acne, oily skin or hair changes
- Confirm the next blood test and review date
These appointments are booked separately. You remain under specialist oversight, rather than receiving a one-off prescription.
