What is vaginal dryness?
Vulval and vaginal dryness during menopause are caused by reduced oestrogen, leading to thinner, less lubricated, more fragile tissues. This can result in itching, burning or discomfort during sex, which may feel painful or irritating.
The symptom can also contribute to urinary tract issues, such as frequent infections and the feeling of a more frequent and urgent need to urinate.
Unlike many menopause symptoms, vaginal dryness is unlikely to improve after a number of years without direct treatment.
