Testosterone Care for Women
Testosterone Care for Women
A specialist-led assessment to determine whether testosterone may be the missing piece for women on HRT.
At Menopause Care, testosterone is assessed and prescribed only by BMS-registered menopause specialist doctors. For some women in perimenopause and menopause, low testosterone may contribute to low libido, reduced arousal and orgasm, as well as fatigue, low mood and brain fog.
We specialise in female hormone replacement therapy, with careful dosing and ongoing safety monitoring. Many women come to us feeling that something is still missing, and often describe the addition of testosterone as the “final piece of the puzzle” in helping them feel more like themselves again.

Benefits of Testosterone
Testosterone replacement in perimenopause and menopause is best known for improving sexual function, particularly:
- Improved libido, sexual desire and arousal
- Greater sexual satisfaction
The strongest evidence in women is for low sexual desire or arousal (HSDD). Emerging research suggests that some women may also notice:
- Increased energy and reduced fatigue
- Improved mood, with less anxiety or irritability
- Clearer thinking, focus and mental clarity
- Support for muscle strength, recovery and bone health
Many women experience Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) or a sense of metabolic sluggishness without realising that androgen therapy for women could offer relief. At Menopause Care, we provide a comprehensive female testosterone clinical treatment pathway, focusing on symptoms that can be overlooked in standard care.
Safety is central to everything we do. At Menopause Care, we prioritise meticulous monitoring of your blood levels for female testosterone therapy, ensuring your testosterone remains within the physiological female range. This expert-led approach to hormone therapy for low testosterone in women is why so many women come to us for safe, effective, long-term results.
the UK, accessing the correct testosterone formulation and dose is essential. At Menopause Care, we provide specialist guidance on low-dose Testogel for perimenopausal women, alongside female-specific formulations such as Androfeme. A clear understanding of Androfeme vs Testogel for female use underpins our prescribing decisions, ensuring treatment is both safe and physiologically appropriate.
At Menopause Care, we take time to explain correct application technique, and realistic expectations from therapy. Our goal is to ensure your gender-specific hormone treatment is aligned with your body’s individual needs. This personalised, evidence-based approach is a consistent theme in Menopause Care reviews and one of the key reasons women choose our clinic.
Every woman’s situation is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Your clinician will work with you to decide whether testosterone is worth considering, explain what benefits are realistic for you, and outline what to expect if you choose to try treatment.
There is no pressure to continue if it does not feel right. Treatment is reviewed carefully, adjusted if needed, and stopped if it is not helping, so care remains safe, effective and tailored to you.

Ongoing review and safety monitoring
Safe testosterone use requires regular review. If you start treatment, we recommend follow-up appointments with blood tests to make sure treatment is working well for you and remains safe.
Reviews are typically at 3 months, 6 months and 12 months, then yearly.
At each review we will:
- Check how your symptoms have changed and whether you are noticing benefit
- Review your blood results to ensure levels remain in a safe range
- Adjust your dose if needed, or discuss stopping if it is not helping
- Check for side effects such as acne, oily skin or hair changes
- Confirm the next blood test and review date
Follow-up appointments are booked separately to ensure ongoing specialist care, rather than a one-off prescription.

Regular follow-up and ongoing support
Everything you want to know
These effects are rare at monitored doses but are possible. They are usually reversible if treatment is stopped early.
Testosterone is mostly used alongside HRT, and can help with symptoms such as low libido and in some energy and cognition, when oestrogen +/- progesterone alone has not helped.
Testosterone therapy in women is primarily used to treat low libido, fatigue, and menopausal symptoms, not as a weight loss treatment. While it can support increased muscle mass and improved body composition, any reduction in body fat is usually modest and works best alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise.
At Menopause Care, we provide specialist guidance on testosterone therapy for women, tailoring treatment to your hormonal needs while supporting overall wellbeing and body confidence.
Some women notice changes in sexual desire within 6-12 weeks, but full benefits often take 6 months.
Some women notice:
- Improved sexual desire and responsiveness
- Increased energy or motivation
- Improved sense of wellbeing or confidence
Not all women respond. If treatment is not helping, we reassess and stop safely.
Side effects can include mild acne, increased facial or body hair, changes in mood, voice changes, or increased skin oiliness. Most side effects are mild and reversible.
At Menopause Care, we monitor treatment closely and make proactive dose adjustments where needed, so any potential side effects, such as skin changes or unwanted hair growth, are managed safely and effectively.
Blood tests are done before starting treatment, at 3 months, then 6–12 months, and annually thereafter to check hormone levels and ensure safety.
Testosterone is not a contraceptive. Pregnancy while on testosterone may harm the baby. Use reliable contraception if applicable.
No. Testosterone is not addictive. It is prescribed to address a hormone deficiency and is stopped if no benefit is seen.
Testosterone is typically used alongside oestrogen ± progesterone for safety and optimal benefit.
AndroFeme® Cream is licensed in Australia and is expected to launch in the UK in 2026 for postmenopausal women with HSDD. In the meantime, AndroFeme® can still be prescribed privately in the UK, although this is an unlicensed use. Another option is Testosterone gel, a preparation licensed for men but sometimes used off-label at much lower doses for women under specialist care.
Testosterone has been shown to be safe and effective for women in the short- to medium-term when prescribed at the right dose and with regular monitoring. Most studies have followed women for up to 24 months, showing improvements in symptoms such as low libido without serious side effects. The main concerns are acne, excess hair growth, or hair thinning, which can usually be managed by adjusting the dose.
Evidence on long-term safety (beyond 2–3 years) is still limited, but ongoing studies are reassuring so far. Importantly, no increase in breast cancer or cardiovascular risk has been seen in the available data, though further research is needed.
Current research suggests non-oral testosterone (transdermal – creams/gels) when used at doses that achieve physiological concentrations, have not been shown to significantly alter lipid levels or increase heart health in the short term.
Testosterone is usually not taken long term. Your clinician will regularly review whether it is helping you and may stop treatment if there is no improvement or the benefits are no longer clear. Evidence supports short‑to‑medium‑term use under monitoring. Long‑term safety studies are still ongoing.
