Oestrogen spray contains a body identical oestrogen called oestradiol, which is sprays directly onto the scan and is gradually absorbed. There is one option of oestrogen spray which is Lenzetto.

Oestrogen spray we prescribe
Lenzetto is a body identical oestrogen product which contains small amounts of a natural hormone called estradiol.
It is an easy-to-use, daily spray. You apply it to the forearm or inner thigh, on clean dry skin and it dries quickly. It gradually passes through the skin into your bloodstream where it then travels throughout the body to help with menopause symptoms.
Each device contains 56 sprays but the number of sprays you use each day will depend on the severity of your symptoms and your doctor’s instructions. It can be difficult to know when it runs out, so marking off sprays on the box can be helpful.
Although it dries within around 2 minutes and leaves no residue, women should wait a few minutes before dressing and avoid swimming or bathing within the first few hours of using it. If using sun cream, this must be applied at least an hour before using Lenzetto.
In women who still have a womb, it needs to be used alongside progesterone to provide endometrial protection.

Key information about Oestrogen spray
Many women begin to notice improvements in symptoms like hot flushes, mood swings, and sleep disturbances within a few weeks of starting the oestrogen spray. However, it can take up to three months to experience the full benefits. If your symptoms persist beyond this period, it's advisable to consult your healthcare provider to discuss potential adjustments to your treatment.
While oestrogen sprays are generally well-tolerated, some women may experience side effects, including:
- Skin irritation: Redness or itching at the application site.
- Breast tenderness: Soreness or discomfort in the breast area.
- Nausea: A feeling of sickness or queasiness.
- Headaches: Mild to moderate head pain.
- Bloating: A sensation of fullness or swelling in the abdomen.
These side effects often diminish as your body adjusts to the therapy. If they persist or become bothersome, it's important to consult your healthcare provider.
Both oestrogen spray and gel are effective methods of hormone delivery, and the choice between them depends on personal preference and lifestyle:
- Application: Sprays often dry quickly and may be more convenient for some women, while gels require a few minutes to dry before dressing.
- Dosing flexibility: Gels may offer more flexibility in dosing adjustments compared to sprays.
- Skin sensitivity: Some women may experience skin irritation with one form over the other.

Both sprays and patches effectively deliver oestrogen, but they have different characteristics:
- Application frequency: Patches are typically applied once or twice a week, whereas sprays are applied daily.
- Skin reactions: Patches may cause adhesive-related skin irritation in some women, while sprays might cause irritation at the application site.
- Lifestyle considerations: Patches are water-resistant, but edges may lift with bathing or swimming. Sprays require a short drying period before dressing.
Your daily routine and personal preferences play a significant role in choosing between a spray and a patch.
As of now, Lenzetto is the primary oestrogen spray available in the UK.
